Art vs. touristification: Souvenirs of resistance

[EN] This paper proposes an artistic research that addresses one of the effects of global territorial hyperconnection: the processes of touristification to which many cities are subjected, naturalized as an unalterable post-capitalist destination and which, here, I propose to rethink through a series of paintings and sculptures. Thus, these are based on the assimilation of the consumption of travel souvenirs during the first tourist phenomenon (XVIII and XIX centuries), that Grand Tour that took potentates and intellectuals from Northern Europe to "exotic" places in the South and East. In the particular case of Malaga, these souvenirs took the form of the so-called "barros malagueños" (Malaga clay figures), small pieces of baked and painted clay that had then great commercial development in the city, which represented the cultural clichés that the orientalist gaze of those travelers projected on the Mediterranean Europe. The displacement of this article takes that imagery of bandits, manolas, dancers, etc. to associate it with the current systematic touristification suffered by historical localities around the world, highlighting the Malaga process by the speed and virulence with which this phenomenon of conversion into brand-cities as attractors of mass tourism is changing its social, urban, economic and political structure. Therefore, these works articulate an ironic re-reading of those "barros malagueños" to, keeping intact their figurative poses of markedly Goyaesque character, make a parallel series of sculptures and paintings that convert the original costumbrista types in the current tourists "partying and drunkenness", enjoying the culmination in perverse key of that romantic look today turned into devastating consumerist blindness. The old souvenir, then, lends here its original festive and topical iconology to the updated reversion of its meaning: from a souvenir of the enlightened traveler it becomes a representational weapon of the present-day native in the face of the excesses of today's touristification.[ES] Esta comunicación plantea una investigación artística que atiende a uno de los efectos de la hiperconexión territorial global: los procesos de turistificación de que son objeto muchas ciudades, naturalizados como destino postcapitalista inalterable y que, aquí, propongo repensar mediante una serie de pinturas y esculturas. Así, éstas parten de la asimilación del consumo de recuerdos de viaje durante el primer fenómeno turístico (ss. XVIII y XIX), aquel Grand Tour que llevaba a potentados e intelectuales del norte de Europa hacia “exóticos” lugares del Sur y de Oriente. En el caso particular de Málaga, esos souvenirs se concretaban en los llamados “barros malagueños” (Malaga clay figures), pequeñas piezas de barro cocido y pintado que tuvieron entonces gran desarrollo comercial en la ciudad, las cuales representaban los tópicos culturales que la mirada orientalista de aquellos viajeros proyectaba sobre la Europa mediterránea. El desplazamiento que articulo toma aquella imaginería de bandoleros, manolas, bailaores, etc. para asociarla a la actual turistificación sistemática que sufren localidades históricas de todo el mundo, destacando el proceso malagueño por la rapidez y virulencia con la que este fenómeno de conversión en ciudades-marca como atractores de turismo masivo está modificando su estructura social, urbana, económica y política. Por tanto, estas obras articulan una relectura irónica de aquellos “barros malagueños” para, conservando intactas sus poses figurativas de marcado carácter goyesco, realizar una serie paralela de esculturas y pinturas que convierten los originarios tipos costumbristas en los actuales turistas “de fiesta y borrachera”, disfrutando de la culminación en clave perversa de aquella mirada romántica hoy devenida en devastadora ceguera consumista. El antiguo souvenir, pues, presta aquí su originaria iconología festiva y tópica a la reversión actualizada de su sentido: de recuerdo del viajero ilustrado pasa a ser arma representacional del indígena actual ante los desmanes de la actual turistificación.Miranda Mas, C.
