Iluminação em museus e galerias : estudo de casos

The reading of lighting in Museums and Galleries as un curatorial practice, where we can see the dynamics that is adopted by these institutions, from de lighting of the facade to the interior of the environment is the object of this dissertation, in which the case study is applied to a set of Museums and Galleries, in an analysis of their contexts related to lighting and the exhibition of works of art. Lighting is one of the most decisive and at the same time most neglected elements. Decisive why? Because if there is not good lighting in a work of art, the lighting will not have fulfilled its role of highlighting the colors, nuances, and emotions portrayed in the work in the best possible way and its observer will not have the due interest in contemplating the work. Neglected why? Because when the organizers of an exhibition are tasked with performing their function, most of the time, they leave the lighting until last, when everything is ready in its place, and there is no more budget available to pay for good lighting. It is through lighting that we can create a mood or make an environment functional. That is why every lighting process has to be monitored from the beginning so that failures do not occur. Lighting these days, even with all the technical apparatus, is still very misunderstood. Because we all know that it exists, that it is playing its role there, we see it, but we do not understand it. We try to explain it succinctly, but we always point to a basic characteristic that it is just a light illuminating an environment, and everything becomes vague in the face of the immensity it provides for us. I aim to demonstrate, through photographic analysis and in-person visits to the environments, the technical form that lighting presents in a curatorial context and to disseminate the professional work of a lighting specialist. Given this unexplored scenario, I will analyze the lighting in Museums and Galleries, more specifically, the Museum of Sacred Art – Brazil, the São Roque Museum – Portugal, the Arca Gallery – Portugal, and the Azimute Gallery – Brazil. Starting with the basics of lighting in Museums and Galleries, following with the presentation of the spaces to be analyzed, and finally with the case studies
