In hypothetical sacrificial dilemmas, efficient kill-save ratios promote utilitarian responses to moral decisions. Currently, the mechanism behind this effect is unknown. The empathy altruism hypothesis proposes that empathic concern and personal distress are motivational states that affect altruistic behaviour.
