Reactive oxygen species (hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl and superoxide radicals) are produced when the regulation of oxygen metabolism is disrupted. These species are directly or indirectly responsible for numerous oxidative damage at the molecular level (nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, etc.) which can affect cellular mechanisms. However, hydrogen peroxide could also behave as a secondary messenger in various signaling pathways and be the source of physiological processes.
