International audienceThis article analyses three visual or textual variations on the motif of the tomb in Arcadia: Aubrey Beardsley’s drawing Et in Arcadia Ego (1896), the visit to the mausoleum of Thomas Light Bowerchalke described in Alan Hollinghurst’s third novel The Spell (1998), and the evocation of the tomb of the war poet Cecil Valance in Alan Hollinghurst’s fifth novel, The Stranger’s Child (2011). This essay is based on an intertextual and intermedial approach and aims to trace a queer genealogy of the topos of the tomb in Arcadia. That topos is not only a code used to articulate homoerotic desires or past gay traumas.
