La tombe en Arcadie revisitée : mausolées, tombeaux et généalogie queer, d’Aubrey Beardsley à Alan Hollinghurst

International audienceThis article analyses three visual or textual variations on the motif of the tomb in Arcadia: Aubrey Beardsley’s drawing Et in Arcadia Ego (1896), the visit to the mausoleum of Thomas Light Bowerchalke described in Alan Hollinghurst’s third novel The Spell (1998), and the evocation of the tomb of the war poet Cecil Valance in Alan Hollinghurst’s fifth novel, The Stranger’s Child (2011). This essay is based on an intertextual and intermedial approach and aims to trace a queer genealogy of the topos of the tomb in Arcadia. That topos is not only a code used to articulate homoerotic desires or past gay traumas. The re-visions or re-writings of the motif form a rhizomatic space in which text and image, the old and the new interpenetrate and illuminate each other to give rise to a queer temporality that disrupts the linear course of time through untimely resurgences, “phantom-images” but also “phantom-texts”, which disrupt the present and confuse the readers/viewers, who no longer quite know where to stand: the topos of the tomb in Arcadia becomes a shifting space, based on an oscillation between ironic distance, camp humour and elegiac notes.Le présent article s’emploie à analyser trois variations visuelles ou textuelles sur le motif de la tombe en Arcadie : le dessin d’Aubrey Beardsley Et in Arcadia Ego (1896), la visite du mausolée de Thomas Light Bowerchalke décrite dans The Spell (1998), troisième roman d’Alan Hollinghurst, et la tombe du poète-combattant Cecil Valance évoquée dans The Stranger’s Child (2011), cinquième opus de ce même romancier. Ce parcours sélectif se fonde sur une approche intertextuelle et intermédiale et s’emploie à tracer une généalogie queer du topos de la tombe en Arcadie. Celui-ci n’est pas seulement un code pour dire les désirs homoérotiques ou les traumas de la communauté gay. Les ré-visions ou réécritures de ce motif forment un espace rhizomatique dans lequel le texte et l’image, l’ancien et le nouveau s’interpénètrent et s’éclairent pour donner naissance à une temporalité queer. Celle-ci perturbe le cours linéaire du temps par des effets de retours, des résurgences intempestives, des « images-fantômes » mais aussi des « textes fantômes », qui fissurent le présent et troublent les lecteurs/spectateurs, qui, pour ainsi dire, ne savent plus bien sur quel pied danser : le topos de la tombe en Arcadie se fait espace mouvant, caractérisé par une oscillation entre distance ironique, humour camp et notes élégiaques
