Energy poverty and a lack of power in rural areas increase poverty in emerging countries. In Sabah, most of the rural area are not connected to the national electrical grid due to not practicable nor cost-effective to expand the grid to serve a tiny town across difficult terrain and dense jungle. Due to high distribution costs and transmission losses, grid energy delivery in rural areas is not economically viable. In these cases, engine generators are frequently employed as the primary option for lighting this area. In fact, this strategy has limitations such as high fuel and maintenance costs.
