Currently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely used due to their low cost and flexibility. In particular, they are used in remote sensing as airborne platforms for various instruments. Here we investigate the capability of a conical scanning radar operated as a scatterometer mounted on a high-altitude UAV to perform sea surface wind retrieval based on an appropriate geophysical model function (GMF). Increasing the maximum altitude of the wind retrieval method’s applicability is an important problem for UAV or manned aircraft scatterometers.
