Advanced degrees holders are becoming increasingly commonplace in American society, as well as at the top of the socioeconomic hierarchy in the United States. Despite this, most sociological research to this day tends to group advanced degrees together with Bachelor’s degrees, which limits our understanding of the role these credentials play in processes of social stratification and social reproduction. This dissertation aims to address this critical gap in the literature by asking three research questions formulated and organized based on the life course perspective.
