Refugee Literature: A Course to Reflect Lincoln

Education is meant to be a reflection of its community. This means that as the community grows and changes, so should education. My thesis asks the question of how Lincoln Public Schools can better reflect the ever-growing population of refugees in the community. It answers this question by offering the outline of a high school elective Refugee Literature course that is in partnership with local refugee organizations. This course creates an interactive community between adolescent and adult refugee populations as well offers a space in which refugee voices in literature are celebrated and learned from. Research around how this course may be most effective in supporting all local refugees is grounded in the effectiveness of art therapy, literature, and trauma-informed practices within the partnership. In tandem with the outline of the Refugee Literature course, this thesis also presents a six-week unit within the course around Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns. This illustrates how literature, art therapy, and trauma-informed practices will be utilized in the classroom to make Lincoln’s education reflect its community and answer its call for transformation.
