Research indicates that the majority of youth aging out of foster care, or former foster youth, aspire to earn a college degree, yet various studies demonstrate that only between 9.9 percent and 12 percent do so. In addition, to former foster youth are also significantly less likely to be currently enrolled in higher education compared to young people in the general population. One recent study found that among a sample of former foster youth who were enrolled in higher education, they were significantly less likely to be enrolled as full-time students or to attend a 4-year institution compared to young people in the general population.
