The glycyl radical enzyme (GRE) superfamily uses a post-translationally installed glycyl radical to catalyze difficult chemical transformations involved in a variety of anaerobic microbial pathways. In Chapter 1, I will provide an overview of the GRE superfamily and the fascinating reactions they are known to catalyze thus far. Although GREs are one of the most abundant enzyme families in the human gut microbiome, a majority of these enzymes still remain uncharacterized, however, limiting our understanding of how they function at the molecular level.
