Conocimientos culturales y educación formal entre los chuj. Hacia una verdadera educación intercultural

The historical condition of social and educational injustice suffered by indigenous peoples has not been substantively modified by the implementation of the recent reforms to the politics of intercultural education, even where these same reforms have resulted from the struggles of these same peoples to realize their rights. The research which forms the basis for this article was undertaken in communities of Maya-chuj descent and in logic of participant research and from an intercultural critical perspective. We address this central tension and enquire as to the relevancy or not of the incorporation of cultural knowledge within formal education. The analysis emphasizes the critical and hopeful position of chuj people; in overcoming their distrust and opposition to the hegemonic system, this same position looks to establish educational strategies based on their cultural resources. In this way, the Maya-chuj anticipates a truly intercultural education which springs from a respectful treatment of their culture and a truthful account of their history.La condición histórica de injusticia social y educativa padecida por los pueblos indígenas no se ha modificado con la implementación de las reformas recientes a la política de educación intercultural, no obstante que tales reformas han sido resultado de las luchas de los propios pueblos para hacer valer sus derechos. La presente investigación, realizada con comunidades mexicanas del pueblo maya chuj en una lógica de investigación participante y desde una perspectiva intercultural crítica, hace frente a este hecho. En este marco, el asunto nodal del debate es la pertinencia, o no, de la incorporación de sus conocimientos culturales a la educación formal. El análisis pone de relieve la posición crítica y esperanzada de la población chuj, la cual, traspasando su desconfianza y en oposición a lo hegemónico, ofrece estrategias educativas basadas en recursos culturales propios. Así, anticipan una educación verdaderamente intercultural, respetuosa y fortalecedora de su cultura e historia
