Explore Best Practices for Non -Expert Volumetric Capture and Virtual Production of Immersive Content

The primary focus of this research project was to investigate and develop a workflow around the emergent technology that is volumetric filmmaking, with an emphasis on how this might be done with limited budgets and experience. The secondary part of the research focussed upon how to create a virtual set within which captured footage would appear. The project sought to understand if a workflow that relied more on open source1 material, affordable technology and a small green-screen and lighting set up, could facilitate a creative with the tools to produce a professional artefact. The project outcomes demonstrated that this technology is yet to mature to allow creatives the ability to add it to their workflow as they would other industry standard digital media production tools. It is also clear from this research that to produce a professional standard production using volumetric capture, a multi skilled team is necessary that must include technical programming proficiency, foundational digital media production knowledge, access to high end hardware and software
