Fishery in the Middle Ages was an activity done in the lagoon as in the rivers, but in different way: fishery done in the rivers was only one of many rights to use public waters. It was an accessory right, at least until the end of the thirteenth century. On the contrary, fishery done in the lagoon was one of the most profitable way to exploiting uncultivated paludal areas. So this activity was increasingly monopolized by the individuals, monastiers and especially from the municipality of Venice.
