Astrocytes are crucial for various physiological functions in the brain such as homeostasis, metabolism, neurovascular coupling or neurotransmission regulation. In injuries, astrocytes become reactive and have a crucial role in the neuroinflammatory response. This reactivity is heterogeneous and depends on many parameters such as the type and severity of insult, astrocyte proximity to insult, or state of brain maturity.
