Influence of COVID-19 on adolescent mental health and the importance of physical exercise, nutrition and screen exposure

Curs: 2021/2022The pandemic caused by COVID-19 has affected the world's population in general, leading to the application of procedures such as quarantine and strict social distancing. Thus, these restrictions have negatively affected physical activity (PA), resulting in repercussions on the mental health of children and adolescents due to increased sedentary lifestyles, the use of screens and the consumption of unhealthy foods. Thus, the main objective was to take a review of studies carried out over the last year to observe how physical activity, screen exposure and diet have influenced mental health during the period of confinement caused by COVID-19. Thus, the data sources used were PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and Scopus in search of relevant articles during the year 2021. The eligibility criteria for the studies were based on observations from experimental studies only with the inclusion criteria being the association between physical activity and mental health, with the use of screens and nutrition also being relevant. Regarding the results obtained, we can observe that physical activity is related to the reduction of internalizing symptoms such as anxiety and depression and externalizing symptoms such as impulse control and aggression. In addition, it has also been found that sedentary life and increased screen time act as a risk factor for depressive symptoms and negative affect, as well as visual fatigue.La pandemia causada por el COVID-19 ha afectado de manera general a la población mundial, llegando a aplicar procedimientos como son la cuarentena y el distanciamiento social estricto. Así pues, estas restricciones han afectado de forma negativa a la actividad física (AF) teniendo como consecuencia repercusiones en la salud mental de los/as niños/as y adolescentes debido al aumento del sedentarismo, el uso de pantallas y el consumo de alimentos poco saludables. De esta manera, el objetivo principal fue realizar una revisión de los estudios realizados durante el último año para observar cómo ha influido la actividad física, la exposición a pantallas y la alimentación en la salud mental durante el periodo de confinamiento causada por la COVID-19. Así pues, las fuentes de datos utilizadas fueron PubMed, Google Académico, Science Direct, y Scopus en busca de artículos relevantes durante el año 2021. Los criterios de elegibilidad de los estudios se basaron en realizar observaciones de estudios únicamente experimentales teniendo como criterios de inclusión la asociación entre la actividad física y salud mental, siendo relevante también el uso de pantallas y la nutrición. En lo que respecta a los resultados obtenidos, podemos observar realizar actividad física está relacionado con la reducción de síntomas internalizantes como la ansiedad y depresión y, con síntomas externalizantes como el control de impulsos y la agresividad. Además, también se ha visto que la vida sedentaria y el aumento del tiempo frente a las pantallas actúan como factor de riesgo en síntomas depresivos y afecto negativo, además de fatiga visual
