Um estranho no ninho: o parentesco morfológico entre palavras

One of the inevitable linguistic operations is that of lexical access, which easily allows us to understand and/or produce words. However, behind the apparent simplicity of the relationship between form and meaning in the context of the word, there are mechanisms that are far from being fully understood and that have been generating a lot of discussion in recent years. In this psycholinguistic crossmodal priming study, we seek to understand how we represent and access a target word that, despite sharing the root with the prime, is foreign to its semantic meaning. These are pairs of words that have a morphological and a semantically diachronic relationship with each other, but that do not have a semantically synchronic one. For example, do we see refrigerante (meaning “soda” in Portuguese) in refrigerar (“to chill” in Portuguese)? Also, how do we represent refrigerante (soda) in our mental lexicon? Finally, does the refrigerar-refrigerante (to chill/soda) processing route differ from a purely semantic route, as in refrigerar-esfriar (morphologically entirely different words but both meaning “to chill”), and a compositional route with transparent semantics, as in refrigerar-refrigerador (to chill-fridge)? The results point to the confirmation of the hypothesis of decompositional models, suggesting: i) new entries in the mental lexicon for words like refrigerante (soda); ii) an identity relationship between compositionally related words, a weaker referential relationship between opaque related words and a variable joint use relationship between semantically-only related words.Uma das operações linguísticas inevitáveis é a do acesso lexical, que nos permite, com enorme facilidade e rapidez, entender e/ou produzir palavras soltas. Porém, por trás da aparente simplicidade da relação entre forma e significado no âmbito da palavra, há mecanismos que estão longe de serem completamente compreendidos e que vêm gerando muita discussão nos últimos anos. Neste estudo psicolinguístico de priming transmodal, buscamos entender como representamos e acessamos um alvo que, apesar de compartilhar a raiz com seu prime, é estranho à acepção semântica do mesmo. Trata-se de pares de palavras que possuem relacionamento morfológico e semanticamente diacrônico entre si, mas não semanticamente sincrônico, como “refrigerar” e “refrigerante”. Será que, quando acessamos “refrigerante”, enxergamos “refrigerar”? Além disso, como representamos “refrigerante” no nosso léxico mental? Por fim, será que a rota de processamento de “refrigerar-refrigerante” apresenta diferenças em relação a uma rota unicamente semântica, como em “refrigerar-esfriar”, e a uma rota composicional com semântica transparente, como em “refrigerar-refrigerador”? Os resultados apontam para a confirmação da hipótese de modelos decomposicionais, sugerindo: i) novas entradas no léxico mental para palavras como “refrigerante”; e ii) uma relação de identidade entre palavras composicionalmente relacionadas, uma relação mais fraca de referencialidade entre palavras opacamente relacionais e uma relação variável de uso conjunto entre palavras apenas semanticamente relacionadas
