In this study, we intend to shed new lights on the investigations proposed about the stress pattern of verbs in Brazilian Portuguese (BP), associating Optimality Theory constraints model with fundamental principles of Metrical Phonology (HAYES, 1995). We propose an analysis of the verbal stress, including the stress contrasts (for example: “parte” and “parti”) present in this class of words and which do not appear in the works on the subject. Based on Parametric Metrical Theory (HAYES, 1995), we considered that three parameters are sufficient to capture the facts regarding the primary stress in the BP verbs, namely: a.
