Un grand amour de Beethoven. Parcours de Brigitte et Jean Massin.

International audienceThis study on Beethoven in France, written for his 250th anniversary, explores the intellectual journey of Brigitte and Jean Massin, the authors in 1955 of Ludwig van Beethoven, still today the French language standard biography. Thanks to unpublished documents of the Fonds Brigitte et Jean Massin at the Institut de Mémoire de l’Édition Contemporaine (IMEC), and other sources, the article retraces their collaboration, starting with their encounter in 1946 in the realm of the Catholic church, and their activism from 1953 on as members of the French Communist Party (PCF). Their notes and manuscripts inform the genetic history of their Beethoven book, originally designed for the music lover, and organized in three parts – a biography, a history of the works, and a hermeneutic essay. Their “revolutionary” figure shows both their belonging to, and their distinguishing from, a French exegetic tradition incarnated among others by Romain Rolland. After a section on the founding in 1959 of a Cercle Beethoven, an organ of the PCF’s cultural diplomacy in the Democratic German Republic, the article discusses, in a women history’s perspective, Brigitte Massin’s essay on Beethoven and Joséphine Brunsvik, first part of Recherche de Beethoven, the Massins’ contribution to the 1970 Bicentennial.Cette étude sur Beethoven en France, conçue à l’occasion du 250ème anniversaire de sa naissance, explore le parcours intellectuel de Brigitte et Jean Massin, auteurs en 1955 de Ludwig van Beethoven, qui reste à ce jour la biographie de référence en langue française. A partir de documents inédits du Fonds Brigitte et Jean Massin de l’Institut de Mémoire de l’Édition Contemporaine (IMEC), entre autres sources, l’article retrace la collaboration des deux époux, marquée par leur rencontre en 1946 au sein de l’Église catholique et leur adhésion en 1953 au Parti Communiste Français. Grâce à leurs notes de lecture et autres manuscrits, il explore l’histoire génétique de cet ouvrage sur Beethoven pensé à l’origine pour le mélomane, et devenu une « somme » en trois parties - Biographie, Histoire des œuvres, Essai. Leur figure du « révolutionnaire » signale autant leur dette que leur volonté de distinction vis-à-vis d’une tradition exégétique française remontant notamment à Romain Rolland. Après une section sur les activités du Cercle Beethoven, intégré dès 1959 à la diplomatie culturelle du PCF en direction de la République Démocratique Allemande, l’article aborde enfin, dans la perspective d’une histoire des femmes, l’essai de Brigitte Massin sur Beethoven et Joséphine Brunsvik, première partie de Recherche de Beethoven, autre ouvrage du couple paru lors du Bicentenaire de 1970
