International audienceFollowing the conventions set by Fontenelle in his 3Nouveaux dialogues des morts" (1683), the vast corpus of European dialogues of the dead presents a recognisable shape in the 17th and 18th centuries. Yet, its humanistic pre-history, as well as its post-history since the 19th century show that the existence of the dialogue of the dead as a form well exceeds the limits of the genre properly speaking. Even more puzzling, the margins of the classical corpus prove intertwined with various other genres, satirical or serious ones, theatrical, novelistic… Unless dialogues of the dead be integrated in broader frames, as a modular part. Migrations, transpositions, hybridisations thus stem from a natural tendency of the dialogu...
