Master's ThesisResearch reveals that Muslims living in the United States face unique factors that impact the underutilization of formal mental health services (Aloud & Rathur, 2009). These factors include but are not limited to stigma, lack of familiarity with services, religious beliefs, and discrimination in the healthcare setting. Although there is a body of research addressing minority experiences with seeking formal mental health services, there is still very limited research examining the barriers to utilizing formal mental health services for the care of pain among Muslims.
