The use of prototypes in engineering design has historically consisted of building, testing, and refining the form and function of concept solutions. However, diverse stakeholders, who impact or are impacted by concept solutions, directly affect design success, including a solution’s form and function. Because prototypes enable communication and collaboration, they can be powerful tools to support stakeholder engagement at the earliest stages of design to inform problem definition and concept exploration.
