In Spring 2004, the first draft of the 270 Mb genome of Schistosoma mansoni will be released. This sequence is based on the assembly and annotation of a >7.5-fold coverage, shotgun sequencing project. The key stages involved in the international collaborative efforts that have led to the generation of these sequencing data for the parasite S. mansoni are discussed here
