The following video demonstrates a novel approach using a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) as a new form of pedagogic activity for higher education. This demonstration sits within a set of pieces that I refer to as a Smear Symphony. In this context the use of effects and feedback networks removes transients, therefore smearing melodic lines so that pitches are detectable within the body of sound but that the sources of these pitches are not known nor easily identifiable by humans or machine learning. The process is also a realisation of the anti-aestheticist use of aesthetic materials which is an aspect that higher education teaching of DAWs tends to find more difficult to implement and which is also infrequently discussed or cited in the ...
