Background: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a potentially fatal inflammatory gastrointestinal disease in preterm infants with unknown pathogenesis. Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells primarily accumulate at sites where exposure to microbes is ubiquitous and regulate immunological responses.
