The book traces the history of Giolito's firm through the generations that have animated its business from the beginning to the end of the sixteenth century. The topics mostly treated are the book trade and the organization of the firm. Specific attention is devoted to the history of their marks and the use of the privilege system as the only institution able to protect the publishers' interests against competition.
