Cultivation in the wet zone of Sri Lanka (the Central and South-Western hilly regions) was initially characterized by a combination of irrigated paddy, dry slashand-burn, and coconut cultivation. The development of a plantation economy after 1840 produced a village-plantation configuration usually described as a classical case of dualism. Micro-structural analysis however reveals several types, one being a genuine case of dualism, another characterized by interpenetration, the latest by actual integration. Historical analysis shows the role of the plantations in disrupting agrarian structures and land use patterns. The exchanges between the two elements of the village-estate couple can be gauged through the study of labour and goods flows.L...
