Published in 1612 in Coimbra, Francisco Suarez’s treaty on laws and God as lawgiver (De legibus ac Deo legislatore) marks the end of Scolasticism, whose scholarly discussions brought about the overturning of the law of nations’ (jus gentium) ancient concept. Following the Dominican Francisco de Vitoria, the Jesuit, Francisco Suarez led this movement to its term prior to the era of the Grotian theory of natural law.
