Based on a study of the epigraphic and numismatic documentation mentioning Ionia during the imperial period, the article examines the reasons for the persistence of an Ionian identity in Roman Asia Minor. In terms of social history, the officials of the koinon belonged to the local élite, but they did not seem to be able to carry out an activity at the provincial level. As for the history of the relations between the cities, the chronological and geographical distribution of the documentation shows that the Ionian claim was reactivated in the context of the struggle for civic titles, in particular by the city of Miletus.
