In the conquest of Valencia in 1238 and its subsequent Christianization we find the genesis of the convent city. Over the centuries the dominant presence of convents and monasteries determined various aspects of the city, urban development being one of them. However, the influence and power that these monasteries exercised diminished gradually with the reduction in the number of their members and foundations. The point of no return comes with the nineteenth century when the successive confiscations and the consolidation of the bourgeoisie mean its fading. This study aims to make an approach to the role that the destruction of convents and monasteries played in the urban development and progress of Valencia towards a capitalist city profile. For that purpose, we pretend to study the processes of secularization, specially undertaken by the minister Mendiz\ue1bal, the beneficiaries of these transactions, as well as the different destinations assigned to the disposed assets and their role in the urban configuration of modern Valencia.La conquista de Valencia en 1238 y su consecuente cristianizaci\uf3n marcan el punto de arranque de la g\ue9nesis de la ciudad conventual. Con los siglos, la presencia creciente y dominante de conventos y monasterios determin\uf3 diversos aspectos de la ciudad, siendo el desarrollo urbano uno de ellos. No obstante, la influencia y poder que ejerc\uedan estos cenobios fue mermando paulatinamente con la reducci\uf3n del n\ufamero de integrantes y de sus fundaciones. El punto de no retorno llega con el siglo XIX, cuando las sucesivas desamortizaciones y la consolidaci\uf3n de la burgues\ueda suponen su desvanecimiento. El presente estudio pretende realizar un acercamiento al papel que ejerci\uf3 la destrucci\uf3n de conventos y monasterios en el desarrollo urbano de Valencia y su avance hacia una ciudad de perfil capitalista. Para tal fin se analizan los procesos de exclaustraci\uf3n, especialmente el emprendido por el ministro Mendiz\ue1bal, los beneficiarios de dichas operaciones, as\ued como los diferentes destinos que les fueron asignados a los bienes enajenados y su funci\uf3n final en la configuraci\uf3n urbana de la Valencia contempor\ue1nea
