New Technologies and tourist mobility: a brief review of some case studies

Traditional tourism statistics present several lacks in detecting tourists’ activities in space-time dimensions, due to their administrative nature, the increasing mobility of tourists and their independence in organizing trips. Since this information is fundamental for the destination management, the need to find new methods for collecting data concerning tourist activities emerges. Then, from the early years of new millennium, several researchers started to study and test the efficiency and the effectiveness of existing new technologies, such as GPS or Mobile Phone, to detect the paths followed by tourists and outline the features of tourist mobility
