The global climate is closely linked to heat distribution, and the ocean circulation plays an essential role in this interhemispheric exchange. Palaeoceanographic data allow to contextualize the ongoing and projected changes in Earth's energy budget within a long-term temporal framework providing scenarios of boundary conditions of the ocean-atmosphere system substantially different from those in the present.
