International audienceThe main causes of coastal erosion, both natural and anthropic, are dealt with in the first section. The degree of erosion is analysed according to the type of coastline and the action of marine agents. Its close correlation with coastal dynamics, especially the generalised regulation of coastlines (last 6,500 years) are stressed, and other causes such as climate (storms) or seismic (tsunamis) hazards as well as rise in sea‑level are reviewed.
