Since the turn of the millennium, a new series of preventative reforms have decisively oriented French perinatal policy toward the improved management of pregnancy, childbirth, and neonatal care. At the same time, the increased visibility of the diagnostic category "postpartum depression" has contributed to the framing of childbirth as a critical moment in which mothers are exposed to potential mental disorders.
