Alcohol addiction, the most severe form of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), is a chronic relapsing disorder characterized by compulsive seeking and drinking of high amount of alcohol, despite knowledge of negatives associated consequences. A critical point explaining relapse is the apparition of a negative emotional state during withdrawal including notably depression, anxiety and apathy (i.e. a loss of motivation). Among the different theories developed to understand the pathophysiology of AUD, the allostatic theory of addiction proposes that negative emotional state as well as emergence of compulsive alcohol use could result from the alteration of neurotransmission systems critical for motivational and emotional functions.
