COVID-19 pandemic and dental education: a study with Brazilian university students

The main objective of this study is to analyze the impact of the coronavirus disease pandemic (COVID-19) on Brazilian dental education. After the pre-test, a selfadministered online questionnaire will be made available, consisting of questions that assess the strategic actions adopted by the Faculties of Dentistry in Brazil during the pandemic, access and use of resources, equipment and home infrastructure for the maintenance of education. distance, as well as anxiety levels and alcohol consumption among undergraduate dentistry students. The dissemination of the project and recruitment of participants will occur through the dissemination of research on social networks (Instagram and Facebook). All dental students duly enrolled in Brazilian educational institutions are eligible. The final questionnaire will be hosted on the Google Forms online platform for fourteen days and will comprise mandatory questions, being divided into 5 different thematic blocks. The statistical analysis will be performed using the software Stata® 12.0. The absolute and relative frequencies were defined for the variables of interest using Pearson's chi-square. The prevalence of the study variables was presented using equiplots. Most students reported in a full distance learning model. Among undergraduate students, 65.4% reported having perceived a very high impact on the teaching of dentistry and 16.6% of students reported not being able to follow the distance. In addition, 14% reported not having a notebook or desktop to study, this condition being more prevalent in non-whites than in whites. It is concluded that Brazilian dentistry students perceived a high impact of COVID-19 in dental education, as well as 1/6 of the students reported not having adequate resources to continue in distance learning.Sem bolsaO principal objetivo deste estudo é analisar o impacto da pandemia de doença por coronavírus (COVID-19) no ensino odontológico brasileiro. Após o pré-teste, um questionário online autoaplicado foi disponibilizado, sendo composto por questões que avaliam as ações estratégicas adotadas pelas Faculdades de Odontologia do Brasil durante a pandemia, o acesso e utilização de recursos, equipamentos e infraestrutura domiciliar para a manutenção da educação à distância, bem como os níveis de ansiedade e consumo de álcool entre os estudantes de graduação em Odontologia. A divulgação do projeto e recrutamento de participantes ocorreu por meio da difusão da pesquisa nas redes sociais (Instagram e Facebook). Todos os estudantes de Odontologia devidamente matriculados em instituições de ensino brasileiras eram elegíveis. O questionário final foi hospedado na plataforma online Google Forms durante quatorze dias e compreendia questões obrigatórias, sendo divididas em 5 diferentes blocos temáticos. A análise estatística foi realizada utilizando o software Stata® 12.0. As frequências absolutas e relativas foram obtidas para as variáveis de interesse por meio do qui-quadrado de Pearson. A prevalência das variáveis do estudo foi apresentada por meio de equiplots. A maioria dos alunos relatou estar em modelo de ensino à distância integral. Entre os alunos de graduação, 65,4% relataram ter percebido um impacto muito alto no ensino de odontologia e 16,6% dos alunos relataram não poder acompanhar a distância. Além disso, 14% relataram não possuir notebook ou desktop para estudar, sendo essa condição mais prevalente em não brancos do que em brancos. Conclui-se que os alunos brasileiros de odontologia perceberam um alto impacto do COVID-19 na formação odontológica, assim como 1/6 dos alunos relataram não possuir recursos adequados para continuar no ensino a distância
