History and economy: legitimizers of the dominant class

History and economy are two interconnected sciences. Some historians claim that history cannot proceed without economic development. The role of economy cannot be underestimated in the progress of world history. When we look at the more developed civilizations during the Antiquity, we see that those civilizations were at the crossroads of trade routes. Also, we can see that the states with more production levels are the ones which led the developments after Middle Ages and during/after Industrial Revolution. This gives us hints about the extent of the relationship between history and economy. When we look at the ideas of Ancient philosophers, we can see that the reason they claim that the rulers of a society must be chosen from the economically well developed classes is the fact that those who have more wealth are less likely to be corrupted. With Middle Ages, as the religious institutions, Church the most dominant one, appear to be land owners; we witness the transformation of economic order into the exploitation of people's beliefs. As mercantilism became the dominant economic idea with the development of overseas monarchies, a state was considered more powerful by counting the amount of gold and silver bullions in its treasure. Finally, when we look at Physiocracy, the historical time limit of this work, we see the economic doctrine of 18th century developed by the dominant aristocrat classes which puts the land ownership as the most important characteristic of richness. This work will analyze the effects of the interconnected sciences of history and economy on the development of universal ideas.İktisat ve tarih, birbirine sıkı sıkıya bağlı iki bilimdir. Bazı tarihçiler, iktisadi gelişim olmadan tarihin de ilerleyemeyeceğini iddia ederler. Gerçekten de, dünya tarihinin gelişiminde iktisatın belirleyici rolü gözardı edilemez. Antik çağlarda gelişmiş olan uygarlıkların özelliklerine baktığımızda hepsinin ticaret yolları üzerinde olduklarını görürüz. Aynı şekilde, gerek Ortaçağ'dan çıkış gerekse Sanayi Devrimi sonrası iktisadi gelişim süreçlerinde de, üretim seviyeleri en yüksek olan devletlerin başat güçler olduklarını görürüz. Bu da bize, iktisat bilimi ile tarih bilimi arasındaki etkileşimin boyutları konusunda önemli ipuçları vermektedir. İlkçağ filozoflarının iktisatla ilgili görüşlerine baktığımızda, genelde toplumu yönetecek sınıfların maddi olarak da üstün olmaları gerektiği fikrini savunmalarının altında, bu sayede siyasi yozlaşmanın önüne geçilebileceği ideali yatmaktadır diyebiliriz. Orta Çağ ile birlikte dini kurumların, özellikle Kilise'nin toprak sahibi olarak gelişmesiyle beraber iktisadi düzen de sömürüye dönüşür. Krallıklarla beraber merkantilizmin egemen hale gelmesi, denizaşırı istilalar sonucu hazinede biriken altın ve gümüş miktarının egemenlik anlamına gelmesi sonucunu doğurmuştur. Nitekim, çalışmamızın tarihsel sınırı olarak koyduğumuz Fizyokrasi'ye bakıldığında da dönemin aristokrat sınıflarının fiziki imkanların önemine atıf yaparak geliştirdikleri bu iktisadi doktrinin, toprak egemenliğini esas alan bir tarihsel yapı içinde daha anlaşılır hale geldiği görülür. Bu çalışmada, sosyal bilimlerin geçirdiği aşamalar da dikkate alınarak; tarih ve iktisat bilimlerinin birbirleri ile nasıl bir etkileşim içinde bulundukları ve evrensel düşünce sisteminin gelişimi üzerindeki etkileri incelenecektir
