Se analiza la evolución de la nuliparidez en la región y los cambios de su perfil sociodemográfico, en base a datos censales de 1980 y 2010. Los resultados muestran la coexistencia de dos tendencias opuestas: un descenso de la nuliparidez en los países que tenían niveles bajos de fecundidad en la década de 1980 y un aumento entre los que partían de niveles altos. Se avanza en posibles vías de interpretación de estos resultados, a primera vista contraintuitivos.
