Lithium ion batteries are widely used in small portable electronics. Their application in larger devices, such as hybrid electric vehicles, depends on their safety and lifetime. When aged at elevated temperature, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) at the cathode side was observed to be responsible for most of the impedance increase of the cells. The SEI film was characterized through combined analyses of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, TGA, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and analysis of the electrolyte when generating this film. Finding the formation mechanism of the SEI, a method to reduce its formation and increase battery performances was also presented. This is an abstract of a paper presented ...
