A proper notice of appeal is a necessary first step inmost federal appeals. But federal litigants sometimesfile their notice of appeal early, before district courtproceedings have ended. When those proceedingsfinallyend and no new notice is filed, the law of cumulativefinality determines what effect-if any-the prematurenotice has. Sometimes the notice is effective and theappeal proceeds as normal.
