This work describes and analyzes the current institutional model of water management in Chile. It explains that there are different types of eclectic solutions that could allow the use and enjoyment of the resource in a self-sustaining way over time. For this, in the first place, an analysis of the challenges in water matters is made. Second, it is argued that the tragedy of the commons (Hardin, 1968) its possible on water if the system doesn’t admit changes. Thirdly, the theory of Elinor and Vincent Ostrom is developed, explaining that there are some institutions that, if strengthened could allow self-government in water matters.
