Background and Aims: In the Western countries, liver cirrhosis is the main cause of portal hypertension, which is defined as a clinical syndrome characterized by an increased hydrostatic pressure within the portal venous system. The importance of this syndrome is defined by the frequency and severity of its complications: gastrointestinal bleeding from ruptured gastroesophageal varices, ascites, hepatorenal syndrome and hepatic encephalopathy.
