Il significato dell'esperienza empatica nel senso comune e in psicologia

Empathy today is a construct relevant to numerous sciences like economics, philosophy, sociology, psychology, education, biology, physics and medicine. The current research proposes this topic from a qualitative point of view and has its theoretically foundation within the psychology of meaning while deriving some ideas from constructivism, personal constructs theory (Kelly, 1955) and phenomenology (Husserl, 1912-1929), as well as from hermeneutics and grounded theory. The study focus is not emphatic behavior but empathic experience; the aim of the research is to understand the nuclear meanings of the emphatic experience, searching for structural relations and structural invariances, in a contextual, limited vision, not universal. The project follows three main steps: 1. A philosophical and psychological presentation of the construct of empathy; 2. Empirical research with a sample of empathy “non experts”. It tries to catch the significance that is attributed to empathy by those who practice it daily with no clear theoretical knowledge about. 3. Empirical research with a sample of empathy “experts”. The theoretical and methodological structure is similar, but the participants change: no more “non experts” but people having clear theoretical knowledge in empathy and use it as a tool for their profession, i.e. psychologists, psychiatrists, … Phases 2 and 3 include the following activities: DATA COLLECTION: - Definition of empathy (Semi-structured Interview); - Search for implications/oppositions (Landfield’s Pyramid, 1971); - Analysis of emphatic experiences (Narrative Interview). DATA ANALYSIS: data collected via semi-structured and narrative interviews are analyzed with software ATLAS.ti, data collected via Landfield’s Pyramids are analyzed through a specific procedure called pyramiding procedure. - Structural relations; - Structural invariances (core meanings).L’empatia, attualmente, interessa molti settori delle scienze economiche, filosofiche, sociologiche, psicologiche, dell’educazione, biologiche, fisiche e mediche. Il presente lavoro si colloca entro la psicologia che guarda al significato e trae preziosi suggerimenti da diversi e molteplici approcci: soprattutto dal costruttivismo, dalla psicologia dei costrutti personali (Kelly, 1955) e dalla fenomenologia (Husserl, 1912-1929), ma anche dall’ermeneutica e dalla grounded theory. Il progetto non vuole concentrarsi sullo studio del comportamento empatico ma sull’esperienza stessa; lo scopo della ricerca è quello di comprendere i significati nucleari che caratterizzano l’esperienza empatica, ricercando le relazioni e le invarianti strutturali, in una visione situata, non universalistica. Più precisamente la ricerca si articola in tre fasi principali: 1. IL COSTRUTTO DI EMPATIA IN AMBITO FILOSOFICO E PSICOLOGICO ; 2. RICERCA CON IL GRUPPO ‘NON ESPERTI’. Si cerca di cogliere il significato attribuito all’esperienza empatica da coloro che la vivono quotidianamente senza averne una chiara conoscenza teorica; 3. RICERCA CON IL GRUPPO ‘ESPERTI’. L’impianto teorico-metodologico è lo stesso della ricerca precedente, ma cambiano i partecipanti: essi sono persone che hanno una chiara conoscenza teorica dell’empatia e la usano anche come uno strumento professionale (psicologi, psichiatri, ...). Le fasi due e tre si snodano secondo il seguente schema: RACCOLTA DATI: - Definizione di empatia (Intervista semi-strutturata); - Ricerca delle opposizioni (Piramidi di Landfield, 1971); - Analisi dell’esperienza empatica (Intervista narrativa). ANALISI DEI DATI: i dati raccolti con le interviste sono analizzati con il software ATLAS.ti; i dati raccolti con le piramidi sono analizzati secondo la specifica procedura (analisi piramidale). - Relazioni strutturali; - Invarianti strutturali (nuclei di significato)
