SILI ITALICI PUNICORUM LIBER NONUS. Introduction and Commentary The present dissertation is a Commentary on Silius Italicus’s Punica, Book 9 (vv. 1-657), which aims at filling a critical gap in specialist scholarship by offering a detailed and fully up-to-date explanatio of a key book of Silius’ poem. Book 9, which recounts Rome’s infamous defeat at Cannae against Hannibal in the Second Punic War, is a major turning point in the poem’s overall design. For each single verse an ad locum commentary is offered, which discusses philological, stylistic, literary, historical and antiquarian issues.
