La lingua della letteratura per l'infanzia dagli anni Cinquanta ad oggi

This thesis presents the analysis of some of the characteristics of the Italian language used in Children’s literature from the 1950s to the present. The research is based on a corpus of 100 texts, selected in accordance with specific criteria and further subdivided into subcorpora; this organization made it possible to compare and contrast texts published between 1950 and 1970 with texts published between 1987 and 2007, text originally written Italian with texts translated from foreign languages, and texts addressed to different age groups (first readers, 7/8 years, 8/10 years). The linguistic analysis, supported by a statistic and quantitative study, describes a selection of unstable elements and morphosyntactic traits of contemporary Italian: demonstratives, third person subject pronouns, third person dative pronouns, subjunctive/indicative mood alternatives in extra-nuclear dependent clauses, in completive subordinate clauses and indirect interrogative clauses. The quantitative analyses were carried out with statistic-linguistic software (Taltac2, Lexico3 and Tree Tagger). The study of each of the above-mentioned aspects is divided into four parts: - a review of the previous studies on the trait under investigation; - the presentation of data, organised in tables in order to simplify the comparison between texts from 1950-1970 and from 1987-2007, texts originally written in Italian and translated texts, and texts addressed to different age groups; - the analysis and interpretation of quantitative data, with an in-depth analysis of a number of samples; - a summary of the results compared with previous research studies. The initial chapters introduce the analysis and provide the background to the research: they provide a general presentation of the study and its goals; a discussion of the problems and methods implemented in previous studies on Children’s literature; an overview of the evolution of Children’s literature from the 1950s to the present; an illustration of the characteristics of the corpus and the criteria according to which it was assembled; an explanation of the linguistic-statistic approach used. Finally, in order to further dwell on linguistic aspects, one specific text which was revised several times from the linguistic viewpoint was investigated in detail. In the third part of the thesis, the publishers’ corrections made in books for children are discussed from a linguistic point of view and the variations emerging in four subsequent editions of Pippi Calzelunghe (first chapter) are analysed in detail. Conclusively, in the light of the analysis of the morphosyntactic features and the diachronic variations of Pippi Calzelunghe, the findings of the study are outlined, although more research is obviously necessary to provide an exhaustive outline of the language used in Children’s literature, i.e. a register of Italian that has often been neglected by linguists.La tesi presenta un’analisi di alcune caratteristiche della lingua della letteratura per l’infanzia dagli anni Cinquanta ad oggi. La ricerca si basa su un corpus di cento testi scelti sulla base di criteri predefiniti e articolati in subcorpora in modo tale da poter confrontare i testi del ventennio 1950-1970 con quelli del ventennio 1987-2007, i testi italiani con quelli stranieri in traduzione, i testi destinati ai primi lettori con quelli indirizzati a bambini di 7/8 anni e di 9/10 anni. L’analisi linguistica descrive, anche da un punto di vista statistico-quantitativo, alcuni elementi e fenomeni morfosintattici che rappresentano punti di instabilità dell’italiano contemporaneo: i dimostrativi, i pronomi personali soggetto di terza persona, i pronomi dativali di terza persona, la concorrenza tra congiuntivo e indicativo in alcune subordinate extranucleari, nelle completive e nelle interrogative indirette. Le analisi quantitative sono state supportate dall’utilizzo di alcuni software di tipo statistico-linguistico (Taltac2, Lexico3 e Tree Tagger). Lo studio di ogni fenomeno morfosintattico è stato suddiviso in quattro parti: un resoconto sulle ricerche già realizzate e sui risultati o sulle ipotesi sostenute dagli studiosi di italiano contemporaneo; l’elaborazione di tabelle con dati quantitativi relativi al tratto in questione che permettono di mettere a confronto i due ventenni scelti, i testi in traduzione con quelli di autori italiani, le fasce di età dei lettori a cui i testi sono rivolti; l’analisi e l’interpretazione dei dati quantitativi con approfondimenti sui testi in esame; un riepilogo per punti dei risultati e delle principali tendenze emerse confrontati anche con i risultati ottenuti da altri studiosi che hanno affrontato l’argomento in questione. A completare il lavoro di ricerca, l’analisi linguistica è preceduta da alcuni capitoli volti a presentare l’argomento e gli obiettivi dello studio, i problemi e i metodi che hanno caratterizzato finora gli studi sulla lingua della letteratura per l’infanzia, un sintetico panorama dell’evoluzione della letteratura per l'infanzia dal secondo dopoguerra ad oggi, le caratteristiche del corpus e i criteri utilizzati nella sua costituzione, l’approccio statistico-linguistico adottato. Infine, per approfondire l’indagine sulla lingua dei libri in esame, si è ritenuto opportuno studiare in modo privilegiato un testo, fra quelli del corpus, che nel tempo aveva subito numerosi rimaneggiamenti linguistici. La terza parte della tesi è quindi dedicata a riflessioni linguistiche su correzioni redazionali di testi per l’infanzia e a un’analisi delle varianti apportate alla traduzione del primo capitolo di Pippi Calzelunghe in quattro edizioni successive. Nelle conclusioni si tratteggia un bilancio delle caratteristiche della lingua dei libri per bambini sulla base di quanto emerso dall’analisi dei fenomeni morfosintattici e delle varianti diacroniche della traduzione di Pippi Calzelunghe, nella consapevolezza che sono necessarie molte altre ricerche per delineare un quadro esauriente della lingua della letteratura infantile, argomento finora largamente trascurato dagli studi linguistici
