Mud-flows are meaningful examples of Italian and worldwide hydrogeological instability; in their catastrophic form they have caused many victims and serious economic damage around the world. To improve safety of human settlements endangered by them it is necessary to predict their occurrence, triggering conditions, and the effects they produce. The prediction of both run-out distances and velocity can notably reduce losses inferred by these phenomena, providing a means for defining and estimating the hazardous areas, and the working out of appropriate design measures.
