Neisseria meningitidis is an encapsulated, Gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the upper respiratory tract of ~10% of humans. With a frequency of one to three cases per 100.000 of the population, the bacterium enters the bloodstream, where it multiplies to high density and cause sepsis. From the bloodstream the bacterium can cross the blood-brain barrier and cause meningitis. The invasive infection is very dramatic, affecting mostly infants, children, and adolescents who do not have bactericidal antibodies against the infecting strains.
