THE CHURCHES OF METAMORPHOSIS IN REPETISTA AND OF SAINT ATHANASIOS IN ANO PARAKALAMOS. The development of painting in Palia Pogdoriani, in the area of Epirus, from the 15th century until 1546. The churches of Metamorphosis in Repetista (in the site called Paitonia or Paidonia) and of Saint Athanasios in Ano Parakalamos are located in the area where the small town Pogdoriani used to be, c. 40 km north of Ioannina. They are probably the oldest religious buildings in the area, with wall painting decoration. This thesis mainly concerns the thorough presentation and study of the surviving wall paintings in the Metamorfosis' church (preserved in the main apse and the east wall of the prothesis) and of the first phase of paint decoration in the church of Saint Athanasios (dated in 1546). Thus the development of monumental painting, from the 15th century until 1546, in the area of Pogdoriani is examined. The study of the two churches is preceded by a brief account of the historical and social environment in the area of Epirus, from the time of the foundation of the Despotate of Epirus until the 16th century. The morphological and architectural elements of the Metamorphosis' church (a single-aisled, cross roofed building, of the rare A3 variation of this architectural type) are crisscrossed with the iconography and style of the wall painting, leading to a dating in the 1st half of the 15th century for the monument. The surviving wall decoration inside the church comprises the representations of the Virgin Vlachernitissa, on the upper zone of the sanctuary's conch, of the four co-officiating Hierarchs, on the lower, and of saint Stephan the first martyr, on the eastern wall of the prothesis. The painting, ichnographically and stylistically, is related with monuments of the paleologan era in Macedonia, especially in Kastoria, Orchid and the area of the lake Prespa. Many common iconographical and stylistical elements are found with the painting of three monuments, two in Epirus (Saint Paraskevi in Monodendri - 1413/4 and Saint Nicolaos in Malouni - 1st half of the 15th c.) and one in Prespa (the hermitage of Panagia Eleousa - 1410). The wall painting of the Metamorphosis' church is probably dated after the painting of Saint Paraskevi in Monodendri (1413/4), and so it can probably be placed in between the years 1414 and 1430, when the city of Ioannina submitted to the Ottomans. The initial plan of Saint Athanasios' church, a single-aisled building with saddle roof, was altered in the year 1550/1, according to an inscription, located on the west side of the monument. The building was enlarged to the west and covered by a vault. Inside, the first phase of its wall decoration is preserved almost intact; it is dated in 1546, according to an inscription on the south wall of the sanctuary. The rest of the wall paintings of the monument are dated in the 17th century. The surviving, initial iconographic program of Saint Athanasios includes 13 evangelic scenes and one scene from the Old Testament. These scenes decorate the upper zone of the main nave and of the narthex's eastern part. In the lower zone are depicted 11 standing saints, saint Athanasios enthrone and the Deisis. Parts of the initial decoration are also discerned in several spots of the sanctuary's conch and walls, and in a smaller zone, over the evangelic scenes, where Prophets are depicted in half, as they are found in the iconographic program of other 16th century churches, in Macedonia, Orchid, Serbia and Epirus. Only three evangelic scenes were initially located in the sanctuary: the Ascension, on the east wall over the conch, the Nativity, on the south wall and the Descend into Hell, on the north. On the south wall of the main nave the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, the Raising of Lazarus and the Entry into Jerusalem are depicted, while on the north wall the Betrayal, the Crucifixion and the Threnos. Finally, the pediment of the west wall is decorated by the scene of the Dormition of the Virgin. On the lower zone of the nave's south wall are depicted (from east to west) saint Athanasios enthrone and saints Nikolaos, Antonios and Euthymios, standing, while on the opposite wall (from west to east) the military saints Theodoros Tiron, Dimitrios and Georgios, and the Deisis. In the narthex's iconographic program we find themes which traditionally are placed in the sanctuary. The Annunciation of the Virgin and the Hospitality of Abraham are depicted on the drum over the reinforcing arch, which belongs to a later constructural phase of the building. On the upper zone of the east part of the south wall, the scene of Transfiguration and on the lower zone (from east to west) saints Ioannikios, Ephraim the Syrian and Symeon the Stylite are depicted. Finally, on the correspondent parts of the north wall, the scene of the Washing of the Feats and martyrs Artemios and Minas are found. The most important element of Saint Athanasios' iconographic program is the commentary of the scenes and of the saints by the two-versed, iambic epigrams of Christophoros Mitilinaios. These epigrams were used in the 14th century in the depictions of menologs (Saint Nikolaos Orphanos in Thessaloniki and Dormition of the Virgin in Trescavac). The unknown painter of Saint Athanasios, faithful follower of the tradition, is inspired by older or contemporary prototypes, from which he draws his themes. These prototypes can be traced in decorated monuments in Macedonia, Orchid, Serbia, Epirus. It seems that he overlooks his contemporary painters of the "Cretan School" and of the "School of the Northwestern Greece", since their influences on his painting do not change the conservative character of his work as a whole. The significant similarities, mainly iconographical but also and few stylistical, with the signed works of the epirotan painter Eustathios Iakovou (the monastery of Molyvdoskepastos-1536/7 and the chapel of Saint Ioannis Theologos, in the monastery of Mavriotissa in Kastoria-1552) illuminate the common descent of the two painters, but also raise the question of the identification of Saint Athanasios' unknown painter with the protonotarios of Arta. The study of the wall decoration in the two churches of Palia Pogdoriani, despite their chronological distance, brought into light common elements, as the conservative character of the painting, which was developed under the influence of the paleologan tradition of the neighboring areas and also the influence of the local, epirotic tradition, without significant innovations. The painters were probably locals, with their artistic roots found into the local tradition, as well as the tradition of Macedonia and the neighboring areas. They represent the conservative trend of the art of their time, a trend that had the approval of the probably conservative society of Pogdoriani and of donors of equally traditional perception. With this thesis, the gap in the studies of the epirotic painting, before or at the time of the appearance of the "School of the Northwestern Greece", is partially filled. Simultaneously, is once again pointed out the relation of the local tradition with the paleologan art of Macedonia.LE CHIESE DELLA METAMORFOSIS A REPETISTA E DI SANT'ATANASIO AD ANO PARAKALAMOS. Svolgimenti pittorici a Palià Pogdoriani nell'area Epirota, dal XV secolo al 1546. Le chiese della Metamorfosis a Repetista e di Sant'Atanasio ad Ano Parakalamos sono ubicate a nord di Ioannina, capitale dell'Epiro, nella presumibile area d'estensione dell'antica cittadina di Pogdoriani, ipotizzando che si tratti dei monumenti ecclesiastici più antichi nell'area, decorati con affreschi. Nello studio si considerano, principalmente, gli affreschi della Metamorfosis, conservati nella conca absidale e sul muro est della prothesis, ed il ciclo pitttorico della chiesa originaria di Sant'Atanasio, risalente secondo l'iscrizione al 1546, per seguire i svolgimenti pittorici nella piccola cittadina, dal XV secolo al 1546. Iniziando dall'investigazione del tessuto storico-culturale della regione epirota, dalla fondazione del "Despotato d'Epiro" ai due primi secoli dell'occupazione ottomana, lo studio va continuato con l'esame delle due chiese. Gli elementi architettonici e morfologici della chiesa della Metamorfosis, di tipologia che adotta la variante A3 delle chiese con tetti congiunti a croce, incrociati con l'iconografia e lo stile della decorazione pittorica, confermerebbero la datazione dell'edificio alla prima metà del XV secolo. Gli affreschi conservati nell'interno della chiesa comprendono la Vergine con Gesù, nel tipo di Vlachernitissa con sotto quattro padri officianti, nella conca absidale, e il protomartire Stefano, sul muro est della prothesis. L'iconografia e lo stile delle pitture rinviano all'arte del periodo paleologo, con magiori riscontri in cicli pittorici a Kastorià , a Ocrida, al lago di Prespa. Maggiori affinità iconografiche e stilistiche, invece, si ritrovano in brani presenti in tre cicli pittorici. Di essi due sono in Epiro-nel katholikon del monastero di Santa Paraskevi a Monodendri (1413-1414) e nella chiesa di San Nicola a Malouni (prima metà del XV secolo)-, mentre, il terzo, nell'eremitaggio di Panaghia Eleousa (1410), ubicato nel lago di Prespa. Si ipotizza, pertanto, che la decorazione pittorica della Metamorfosis sia posteriore di quella di Santa Paraskevi. Quindi si avanza l'ipotesi di una ragionevole datazione post quem l'anno 1414 e ante quem il 1430, anno dell'occupazione di Ioannina dagli ottomani. La chiesa originaria di Sant'Atanasio era ad unica navata con tetto a due spioventi. L'anno 1550-1551, testimoniato dall'iscrizione sul frontone della facciata ovest del monumento, il piccolo edificio è stato innalzato, ampliato verso ovest e coperto con volta a botte longitudinale. L'interno della chiesa attuale conserva, quasi, intero il ciclo pittorico originario, risalente al 1546, secondo l'iscrizione sul muro sud del bema. Il resto delle pitture sono posteriori e si datano al XVII secolo. IL programma originario comprende 13 scene evangeliche e una tratta dal Vecchio Testamento, raffigurate sul registro superiore nel naos e nella parte est del nartece, mentre sotto sono rappresentati 11 santi in piede, sant'Atanasio in trono e la Deesis. Altri brani della decorazione originaria si distinguono nel bema e nella fascia sopra le scene evangeliche, in parte coperta da pitture posteriori. In essa presumibilmente erano raffigurati profeti in busto, ricostruita da altri esempi analoghi del XVI secolo in Macedonia, ad Ocrida, in Serbia, in Epiro. Dalle scene evangeliche in origine, prima della ricostruzione dell'iconostasio, si trovavano nel bema: l'Ascensione, sul frontone sopra la conca absidale, la Natività , sul muro meridionale, e ad essa antistante la Discesa agli Inferi. Il programma continuava nel naos con sei scene distribuite sul registro superiore nelle pareti laterali: Presentazione di Gesù al Tempio, Resurrezione di Lazzaro e Ingresso di Gesù a Gerusalemme, a sud, e Tradimento, Crocifissione, e Compianto, sulla parte opposta. L'ultima composizione nel naos, la Dormizione della Vergine, occupa il frontone occidentale della chiesa originaria. Il programma del naos va integrato con la riffigurazione dei santi Atanasio, Nicola, Antonio ed Eutimio, sul muro meridionale, dei santi militari Teodoro il tiro, Demetrio, Giorgio e la Deesis, sulla parete settentrionale. Nel programma iconografico del nartece si inseriscono temi, i quali tradizionalmente vanno rappresentati nel bema: l'Annunciazione e l'Ospitalità d'Abramo, sul frontone sopra l'arco posteriore di rinforzo. Sulla parete sud sopra è rappresentata la Trasfigurazione e, sotto, i santi Gioannicio, Efremo il siro e Simeone lo stilita. Infine sulla parete settentrionale esiste la scena della Lavanda e nel registro sottostante i santi Artemio e Mena. L'elemento distintivo nel ciclo pittorico di Sant'Atanasio è l'uso degli epigrammi che accompagnano tutte le immagini, tratti dal calendario giambico di Cristoforo Mitileneo, commentati puntualmente, il quale rinvia alla tradizione macedone e serba del XIV secolo (San Nicola Orfanos a Salonicco e Dormizione della Vergine a Trescavac ). Il frescante ignoto delle pitture di Sant'Atanasio, ancorato alla tradizione, si ispira e trae i suoi temi da prototipi anteriori oppure coevi di concezione conservativa. In generale, la tipologia usata dal pittore sia quella formata nell'ultimo periodo paleologo in Macedonia, a Ocrida, in Serbia, in Epiro, impiegata anche nella seconda metà del XV secolo a Kastorià e alle Meteore, dal cosidetto atelier di Kastorià . Ugualmente l'analisi stilistica ha portato ad individuare un linguaggio ancorato al periodo paleologo, esente da influssi diretti di opere pittoriche delle scuole cinquecentesche della "Grecia nord-occidentale" e "cretese". Maggiori affinità si osservano con le opere del pittore epirota Eustathios Iakovou che ha eseguito nell'anno 1537 gli affreschi del monastero di Molivdoskepastos e ha dipinto il parekklesion di San Giovanni Teologo nel monastero di Mavriotissa a Kastorià (1550). Il fatto che per iconografia e per stile gli affreschi di Sant'Atanasio presentino alcuni dettagli unici e caratteristici che si ritrovano nell'opera di Eustathios Iakovou suggerisce la questione se si tratti di opere dello stesso pittore, proposta per la prima volta in questo lavoro. Dallo studio dei due cicli pittorici conservati a Palià Pogdoriani si chiarisce come gli svolgimenti pittorici del piccolo centro epirota s'inseriscano nella tradizione paleologa quale si articola nell'ambito culturale e artistico della Macedonia, collegandosi maggiormente con le produzioni artistiche di Kastorià , del lago di Prespa, di Ocrida. Per certi particolari iconografici invece, scelti da entrambi i pittori e presenti in altre imprese pittoriche dell'Epiro, sembra probabile un attaccamento e una continuità con la tradizione locale epirota. Della fisionomia artistica di quest'ultima regione il lavoro chiarisce validamente gli aspetti sinora ignorati dagli studi
