B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) is the most common leukemia in adults and it is characterized by the accumulation of monoclonal small CD5+ B lymphocytes, in peripheral blood, bone marrow and lymphoid organs. The clinical course encompasses indolent to aggressive disorders, the latter requiring intensive therapeutic intervention. In the past, several clinical and biological prognostic factors have been proposed, including clinical stage, lymphocyte doubling time, bone marrow infiltration, percentage of prolymphocytes, serum β2 microglobulin, tymidine kinase and soluble CD23 levels.
