New approach to Clausius Virial Maximum Theory and its link to cusp/core problem

Dark matter (DM) is the dominant mass component in the universe and also the major constituent of cosmological structures like galaxy clusters or galaxies. Therefore, dark matter plays a fundamental role in the formation and evolution of these structures. During the past decades, the formation, dynamics and evolution of the DM halos, has been studied in great detail. The outcome of all the cosmological simulations is that the dissipationless DM component forms a nearly stable halo with an almost universal density shape, which is well fitted by the profile given by Navarro et al. (1997, hereafter NFW). However, the density profiles derived from the observed rotation curves of spiral galaxies (in particular, from Low Surface Bright galaxies) show much shallower profiles than the NFW profile or even indicate a core structure. Moreover theoretical considerations based on Jeans equation give a message of the same sign. Therefore, the question arises whether the DM halo profiles really have an universal shape and, in particular, which mechanisms or processes could then influence or change the DM density profile towards the observed ones. The Dynamical Theory of Clausius Virial (TCV) of Secco (2005) represents an interesting way to attack it starting from the exsistence of the galaxy Fundamental Plane (FP). This theory moves from the fact that a two-component system, built up of a stellar spheroid completly embedded in a massive dark matter halo, may reaches a maximum amount of virial potential energy, called Clausius Virial (CV), related to its bright component. This is unexpected with respect of the monotonic behavior of its corresponding total potential energy. This is of extreme interest, as every time a stationary point appears in a dynamical quantity of a mechanical system, it may be a special configuration for the system. The existence of a maximum in the CV could be a sort of dynamical ''attractor'', a reference point for the galaxy structure. The first version of the theory was formulated by using two power-laws for the mass density profiles of the two component. Inspite of its semplicity, it allowed detailed and especially analytical analysis of the main mechanisms intervening in the CV maximization. Moreover it was able to explain some of the most important scaling relations of early type galaxies (ETGs) as soon as the inner slope of DM density profile was lower than 1. As further step we extend here this analysis to more complex and realistic descriptions of real ETGs. The twofold aim of this thesis is then: (i) to produce a new TCV approach with more realistic and self-consistent dynamical models of ETGs in order to analyze if stationary points are present, what are their follow-up on the features of FP; (ii) to understand how these outputs of TCV are linked to the value of the inner slope of the DM halo and to cosmology. In the present new, higher level of approximation the TCV is developed modelling the stellar component by a King-model with a cut-off. The inner component is now more realistic for the ETGs even if the DM halo density remains a cored power-law. In this framework again a maximum value for the Clausius' virial energy (CV) of the baryonic component exists, and the corresponding configuration has the property to share its virial energy into two parts: one due to the self-gravity of baryons and the other one to the fraction of dark matter (DM) which exerts dynamical effects on the first. This equipartition links, with a no longer proportional relation, as in the linear issue of the theory, but in a unambiguous way, the two central densities of the two components, i.e., the two potential wells which determine the mean surface brightness of the luminous subsystem. In order to do that, the new TCV approach needs to be strictly linked to the cosmology. Concerning the second aim, the new TCV allows us to understand more deeply what is the dynamical reason of the FP tilt and in general how the CV theory may really be the engine to produce the FP main features (e.g., the zone of exclusion, ZOE). The partial degeneracy of FP with respect to the initial density perturbation spectrum, underlined firstly by Djorgovski (1992), may be now fully understood in a CDM cosmological scenario. The comparisons of theoretical FPs with observations, e.g., that of Diorgovski \& Davies (1987) in Lick $r_G$ band or that of Burstein et al. (1997) in B band, give us more prompts about the slope. From the outputs of this theory the FP coefficients for the ETGs so as the trend mass/luminosity vs. mass (the tilt) are fairly good reproduced if the bulk of baryons are embedded into a DM universal density profile around $1/r^{0.5}$. Under this condition, also the ZOE may be explained. In this case, the ZOE limit appears to be bent in the galaxy mass range and reaches that found by Burstein et al. (1997) only when the masses become of the order of the Galaxy Clusters. The slope relevance is also correlated with the attractiveness of CV maxima which is in turn linked to the thermodynamical properties of CV maxima. Inside this framework we have explored the fate for collisionless systems when a violent mechanism acts to lead them to virial equilibrium. In order to justify the link of the mean temperature of the stellar component to the kinetic energy of the $B$ component, assumed in TCV as an ansatz, we need to know if, on the classical basis, we are dealing at the end of the relaxation phase with a unique Gaussian for this star mixture, or not. The thermodynamical non-linear approach of the TCV, we have also performed in a preliminary way, shows that the comparison between the CV maxima inside a $\gamma=0$ and inside a NFW profile, tells us that when they are present in this last case, they do not work as attractors of the relaxed configuration of the baryons as in the previous case. The results related to these two limit profiles once put together, allow us to confirm what already found in the first order approach, i.e., how much is remarkable the value of the slopes where falls the CV maximum in a way that slower slopes are always related to higher values of its relative entropy.La materia oscura (Dark Matter, DM) e' la componente dominante in massa dell'intero universo ed anche il costituente principale delle strutture cosmiche come gli ammassi di galassie e le galassie. Pertanto essa gioca un ruolo fondamentale nella formazione e nell'evoluzione di tali strutture. Negli ultimi decenni molti studi sono stati dedicati alla formazione, la dinamica e l'evoluzione degli aloni di DM. Il risultato di tutte le simulazioni cosmologiche e' che la componente non dissipativa di DM forma un alone pressoche' stabile con un profilo di densita' quasi universale, ben fittato dal profilo proposto da Navarro et al. (1997, NFW). Tuttavia, i profili di densita' derivati dalle curve di rotazione osservate in galassie a spirale (in particolare in galassie Low Surface Brightness) mostrano andamenti meno ripidi del profilo di NFW o almeno indicano una core-structure. Inoltre, considerazioni teoriche basate sull'equazione di Jeans sembrano dare un messaggio analogo. Pertanto, sorge il problema se veramente i profili degli aloni di DM abbiano un andamento universale e, in particolare, quali meccanismi o processi possano quindi influenzare o modificare i profili di densita' di materia oscura in accordo con quelli osservati. La Teoria Dinamica del Viriale di Clausius (TCV) di Secco (2005) rappresenta un interessante tentativo di affrontare la questione partendo dall'esistenza del Piano Fondamentale (FP) delle galassie. Questa teoria prende spunto dal fatto che un sistema a due componenti, costituito da uno sferoide stellare completamente immerso in un alone massivo di materia oscura, possa raggiungere un massimo dell'energia potenziale viriale, detto Viriale di Clausius (CV), legato alla sua componente luminosa. Cio' e' inaspettato in relazione all'andamento monotono della sua energia potenziale totale corrispondente. Tale dato e' di estremo interesse, in quanto ogni qualvolta si presenta un punto stazionario in una quantita' dinamica di un sistema meccanico, e' naturale pensare che quello possa rappresentare una configurazione speciale per l'intero sistema. L'esistenza di un massimo nel CV potrebbe dunque essere una sorta di ''attrattore'', un punto di riferimento strutturale per le galassie. La prima versione della teoria fu formulata usando due leggi di potenza per i profili di densita' di massa delle due componenti. Contrariamente alla sua semplicita', permette l'analisi dettagliata e soprattutto analitica dei principali meccanismi che intervengono nella massimizzazione del CV. Inoltre e' in grado di spiegare alcune delle piu' importanti relazioni di scala delle galassie earlty type (ETGs) non appena si assume una pendenza interna del profilo di densita' di DM minore di 1. Come passo successivo, qui, estendiamo l'analisi ad una descrizione piu' complessa e realistica delle ETGs. L'obiettivo di questo lavoro di tesi e' duplice: (i) realizzare un nuovo approccio alla TCV con modelli dinamici di ETGs piu' realistici ed autoconsistenti per analizzare se sono presenti punti stazionari e quali sono le loro conseguenze sulle proprieta' del FP; (ii) capire come i risultati della TCV sono collegati al valore della pendenza interna dell'alone di DM e alla cosmologia. In questa nuova approssimazione di ordine superiore, la TCV e' sviluppata modellando la componente stellare con un modello di King con cut-off. Ora per le ETGs la componente interna e' sicuramente piu' realistica anche se il profilo di densita' dell'alone di DM rimane una cored power-law. In questo quadro, esiste ancora un valore massimo dell'energia viriale di Clausius della componente barionica e la configurazione corrispondente ha la proprieta' di equipartire l'energia viriale in due parti: una dovuta all'autogravita' dei barioni e l'altra dovuta alla frazione di DM che esercita effetti dinamici sulla componente luminosa. Questa equipartizione collega, con una relazione non piu' di proporzionalita', come nella versione lineare della teoria, ma in modo univoco le densita' centrali delle due componenti, cioe' le due buche di potenziale che determinano la brillanza superficiale media del sottosistema luminoso. Per far cio' il nuovo approccio della TCV deve essere fortemente legato alla cosmologia. Riguardo il secondo obiettivo, la nuova TCV permette di comprendere in maniera piu' profonda la ragione dinamica del tilt del FP ed in generale come il massimo del CV possa realmente essere il motore che produce le proprieta' principali del FP (ad es., la zone of exclusion, ZOE). La parziale degenerazione del FP rispetto allo spettro di perturbazione di densita' iniziale, sottolineata per la prima volta da Djorgovski (1992) puo' essere ora compresa a pieno in uno scenario cosmlogico CDM. Il confronto degli FPs teorici con le osservazioni, ad es., quelle di Djorgovski & Davies (1987) in banda Lick $r_{G}$ o quelle di Burstein et al. (1997) in banda B, ci fornisce ulteriori indizi riguardo la pendenza interna degli aloni di DM. Dai risultati della teoria i coefficienti del FP delle ETGs cosi' come la relazione mass/luminosity vs. mass (il tilt) sono ottimamente riprodotti se il volume che contiene la frazione principale dei barioni e' immerso in un alone di DM con profilo di densita' del tipo $1/r^{0.5}$. Sotto questa condizione anche la ZOE puo' essere spiegata. Infatti in questo caso, il limite della ZOE appare essere curvo nel range di massa delle galassie e approssima quello trovato da Burstein et al. (1997) solo quando le masse diventano dell'ordine degli ammassi di galassie. L'importanza della pendenza interna di densita' di DM e' anche collegata all'attrattivita' del massimo del CV che a sua volta e' collegata alle proprieta' termodinamiche del massimo del CV. Riguardo quest'aspetto abbiamo esplorato il destino finale dei sistemi non collisionali quando un meccanismo di rilassamento violento agisce per portarli all'equilibrio viriale. Per giustificare la relazione tra la temperatura media della componente stellare e l'energia cinetica della componente barionica, assunta nella TCV come un ansatz, abbiamo bisogno di sapere se, in accordo con la letteratura classica, stiamo trattando alla fine della fase del rilassamento con un'unica Gaussiana per questa miscela di stelle, o no. L'approccio termodinamico non lineare della TCV che abbiamo realizzato, sia pur in via preliminare, mostra che il confronto tra i massimi del CV in un profilo $\gamma=0$ o NFW, suggerisce che quando sono presenti in quest'ultimo caso, non agiscono come attrattori della configurazione rilassata dei barioni come nel primo caso. I risultati relativi a questi due profili limite ci permettono di confermare quanto gia' trovato nell'approccio di primo ordine, cioe' quanto sia fondamentale il valore della pendenza in cui cade il massimo del CV nel modo che pendenze piu' piccole sono sempre collegate a valori piu' alti della sua entropia relativa
